The Program

Australia Has Millions of Solar Systems — Few Batteries

Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, with more than 4 million systems installed — yet only around 1 in 40 households has a battery. The high upfront cost has kept batteries out of reach for many, until now.

Households, businesses and community organisations can now access a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of installing a small-scale battery system, sized between 5kWh and 100kWh.

How The Discount Works

  • Available for batteries connected to new or existing solar PV systems
  • Funded by the government — no extra cost passed on to you
  • Based on the battery's usable capacity and eligible certificates
  • Reviewed annually, and will gradually reduce through to 2030

Common Questions

FAQs

How much does the program discount my battery?
The discount is around 30% of the upfront cost of an eligible battery, based on its usable capacity. The exact amount depends on the battery model and the number of eligible certificates it generates at the time of installation.
Do I need solar panels already installed?
The discount applies to batteries connected to either a new or an existing solar PV system, so you can install solar and a battery together, or add a battery to a system you already have.
Will the discount amount change over time?
Yes. The discount rate is reviewed at least annually and is expected to gradually decrease through to 2030, in line with falling battery prices.
Is this the same as the NSW battery rebate?
No — this is a separate federal program administered by the Clean Energy Regulator, while NSW also runs its own Peak Demand Reduction Scheme incentives. In some cases, these may be able to work alongside each other. Contact us and we'll clarify what applies to your situation.
What size battery is eligible?
Small-scale battery systems between 5kWh and 100kWh usable capacity are eligible under the program.
Are businesses and community organisations eligible too?
Yes — the program is open to households, businesses and community organisations installing an eligible small-scale battery system.
